Washington, Illinois Lions Club

MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITY 1971-1972

During Booster Days in our town, we set up a dunk tank. This was a two day event  that proved very successful. Being our first project the club spirits were good. Also this activity event went over big with the public. Even though this fell in the middle of vacation we had a good turn out, net profits were $145. This is a project that can go over big wherever it is held. Shared paying one-half of the doctor bills for two cases with the Sunnyland Club.

MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITY  1975-1976

Paid for an eye exam and glasses for a Vietnamese refugee at a cost of $69. Donated $50 to our local county senior citizens council for vision conservation institute eye sight screening service. We held Candy Day October 10th during the morning and evening. A check for $225 was sent to the District Governor, which was 60% of the money cleared on candy day. Our club held a broom sale during the month of May. We sold 432 brooms. We presented a check for $500 to the local Illinois Rescue Squad. This money was part of the money raided by a broom sale held in May. We presented a Braille writer for a five year old girl; $180 was donated to Lions of Illinois Foundation; $100 to the Tazewell County Health Department. The used to money to help purchase a blood chemistry system to be used in their health services to the residents of Tazewell county.

MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITY 1981-1982

Donated $350 to our local Fire Department; and $350 to our local volunteer Fire Department towards eye exams and glasses for the needy; $100 to a Drug Abuse program. Continued to pay for eye exams and glasses for the needy individuals. A member Lion Roger Grigsby completed a walk to 10 miles for CROP, he made the walk in his wheel chair assisted by his wife. Roger is blind. Our club held a pain and cleanup day at the home of fellow Lion Roger Grigsby who is blind. Lion Roger is confined to a wheel chair and his wife is also blind. Several Lions assisted at the Washington TOMA drug and Alcohol abuse planning meeting. We donated $400 (of $661 net) from Candy Day to Lions of Illinois Foundation. Our club sold a large size coloring book as a fund raising project, 40 books were received. We sponsored for $100 a local Farm League baseball team. Award a $300 scholarship to a local high school senior to study in college health services for the handicapped. Our clubs light bulb sale raised $4,432 to a profit of $2,142. Donated $100 to eye research Center in memory of deceased Lion member Frank Hogan.

MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITY 1987-1988

Held a glaucoma and diabetes screening in the bus at the Cherry Tree Shopping Center. Helped purchase several eye exams and glasses for needy residents. Made a $100 donation to the American Diabetes Associated; $250 to the Northern Tazewell Fire and Rescue Squad. Awarded a $500 scholarship to a student from our local high school to work in physically handicapped areas. Donated $200 to the Rotary Clubs polio plus program. Completed a successful screening of 87 people. Donated $500 to our local public library for large print books. Completed a successful candy dale sale in October, cleared approximately $900. Provided a $100 scholarship for a high school student involved in community development; $500 scholarship for a local high school student. Our light bulb sale profits were over $2000.

MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITY 1992-1993

Purchased many pairs of eye glasses for needy people. Donated another $500 scholarship to a local student going into humanitarianism. Mint program took in $200 last month. Light bulb sale to date sold $3,300 so far. Presented a $100 Citizenship Award at the Washington High School. Sold 90 cases of light bulbs. Donated $500 to the library; $200 to Fire Rescue Department; and $250 to Northern Tazewell Fire and Rescue Department. Donated $600 to our local library to purchase 50 large print books; $400 to purchase Apple computer to 7th grade at our local grade school. Sponsored a Farm Team in Little League at a cost of $100. Donated a $500 scholarship to a high school student; and $100 plus a plaque presented at the high school for a Citizenship Award. Donated $100 to Washington Senior Citizen Center; $100 to sponsor a summer baseball farm team.
